We Are Not Insane!

In my Easter Sunday message, I refer to what Governor Festus said to the Apostle Paul in Acts 26, when Paul mentioned the resurrection of Christ.

At this point Festus interrupted Paul’s defense. “You are out of your mind, Paul!” he shouted. “Your great learning is driving you insane.”

That’s what the world sometimes says about Christians: “You’re insane. You’re crazy to believe these stories in the Bible, to believe in a risen Savior.” But the apostle Paul didn’t accept that characterization; he wouldn’t stand for it. “I am not insane,” most excellent Festus,” Paul replied. “What I am saying is true and reasonable. “

The message of Christ and of the resurrection is not insane, illogical or unreasonable. It makes sense. It is true and perfectly reasonable. If anyone calls you crazy for following Christ, do as Paul did. Make a simple defense and let them know you are perfectly sane, and that your logic is true, sensible, and in accordance with sound reasoning.

If they don’t listen to you, they are, well, I’ll not call them insane. But they remind me of the kind of people Vance Havner once referred to when he quipped: Those who think Easter a myth are… myth-erable.
