“How Foolish You Are”

When the Lord Jesus joined the two travelers on the Emmaus Road in Luke 24, He asked them what they’d been discussing. Their faces were downcast, and they expressed pain and perplexity about the events surrounding Jesus of Nazareth, who had been crucified. Jesus drew them out, asked questions, and noted their confusion. Then He said something startling to them.

“How foolish you are,” He said, “and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!”

I’m glad Jesus was so blunt, because I often need that same kind of bluntness. Unbelief is always foolish. When we gave way to desolation and despondency, it’s because we’re forgetting what the prophets have said. We’re overlooking the promises of the Scripture. We’re forgetting that the Risen Christ is beside us opening the Scriptures and helping us to view our circumstances through the lens of His plan.

Lack of faith is folly.

Or to put it in the reverse: It’s always wise to trust the Lord. It’s sensible to take Him at His Word.
