I’ve heard about “Word of Life” for years — the fabulous international ministry started by Jack Wyrtzen and Harry Bollback in the 1930s. It sprang from the evangelistic rallies Wyrtzen conducted in New York City and elsewhere (see the pictures below). In 1940, Word of Life purchased an island in the middle of Scroon Lake high in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York State. So I was thrilled to be invited to be a conference speaker this summer and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I learned that Word of Life has a number of camps and conferences around Scroon Lake, including the original Island, which is a high school camp; the Wild, for Middle Schoolers; the Ranch, for elementary children; the Pines, for family camping; the Lodge, for families, individuals, and groups; and a Bible Institute. A young person can begin attending in childhood and build on the experience all the way to the Institute, which is a high-quaility two-year, accredited educational experience. World of Life also has camps and campuses in Florida — and works going on in 70 nations of the world. The Scroon Lake ministries host 12,000 people every summer. Many of the guests to whom I spoke were making Scroon Lake their annual vacation, taking advantage of the water sports and the spiritual opportunities for grow and refreshment. It’d be a great place for your family to go — high, high, high in the Adirondacks. For more information, check out their website.
